Driver Identification
Knowing who is driving a vehicle at any point in time is valuable information for many purposes, including:
- Collating driver mileage
- Finding the time each driver has spent at the wheel
- Making drivers accountable for their routes and speeds
- Identifying drivers for traffic offences
- Automatically generating driver timesheets
Using driver idenfication before an engine is started also has other security advantages:
- Only lets permitted drivers start an engine
- Acts as an immobiliser, reducing the risk of theft
Some models of vehicle trackers have an input for an iButton. Each driver would be given a unique iButton key fob, and could not start the engine without resetting the immobiliser first. When the vehicle is started, a unique code for each iButton is transmitted to the server which identifies the driver.
If a driver uses a private car for company driving, they can separate work and private journeys by using two iButtons: one for work mileage, and another (or none at all) for private mileage.
